Police arrest 21 motorists for DUI

During the week of Feb. 5-11, Hawaii Island police arrested 21 motorists for DUI. Three of the drivers were involved in traffic accidents. Two of the drivers were younger than 21.

The numbers of arrests by district were:

• Kona, eight.

• Puna, seven.

• South Hilo, five.

• South Kohala, one.

So far this year, there have been 123 DUI arrests compared with 149 during the same period last year, a decrease of 17.4 percent.

There have been 116 major accidents so far this year compared to 168 during the same period last year, a decrease of 31 percent.

To date, there have been two traffic fatalities compared with four at this time last year. This represents a decrease of 50 percent for fatalities.

DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
